Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess how well the problem of gunshot injury to the enthesis has been developed in the contemporary scientific literature, based on a systematic bibliometric analysis. A structured search was conducted in PubMed, OpenAlex, Web of Science/Scopus, Google Scholar, eLIBRARY.ru, and CyberLeninka using keywords related to gunshot trauma, enthesis/enthesopathy, and periarticular tissues, followed by merging and comparison of the retrieved publication sets. It was found that, despite tens of thousands of publications devoted to gunshot injuries and thousands of papers addressing enthesopathies and the enthesis, the indexed databases contain no clinical studies that simultaneously consider gunshot damage to the tendon–bone attachment zone as an independent object of analysis. Combined queries linking the terms “gunshot” and “enthesopathy/enthesis” yielded zero results in PubMed, and the few records identified in open bibliographic systems proved, upon verification, to be unrelated to the clinical problem (paleopathology, archaeology). These findings indicate that “gunshot enthesopathy” is currently a “blank spot” in the scientific literature, and that its establishment as a distinct clinico morphological category requires primary description and the development of appropriate terminology, classification, and an etiopathogenetic concept.
